Purity assessment typically involves high-performance liquid chromatography for the peptide and atomic spectroscopy for copper content. The ratio of copper to peptide is a key quality parameter; a value near one indicates proper stoichiometry. Impurities can include free peptide, copper salts, and truncated sequences from synthesis. Because the complex is dynamic, sample preparation and mobile-phase conditions can shift the observed species. Reported purity values therefore depend on the analytical method and should be interpreted with that context.
Characterizing GHK-Cu requires methods that distinguish the intact complex from free peptide and unbound copper. UV-visible absorption around 600 nm provides a rapid check for copper coordination, while circular dichroism reports on peptide secondary structure. Mass spectrometry confirms the peptide mass and can detect copper adducts under carefully controlled conditions. Electron paramagnetic resonance is particularly informative for Cu(II) because it reveals the ligand field symmetry. No single technique fully defines the complex, so laboratories combine orthogonal methods.
Published work on GHK-Cu is dominated by in vitro experiments and small animal studies. Human trials tend to be short and small, with endpoints such as skin appearance rather than clinical outcomes. Review articles often summarize the same underlying laboratory findings, which can make the evidence base look broader than it is. Several basic questions remain open: the concentration of the intact complex in human tissue, the route by which it crosses the skin barrier, and whether effects seen in culture produce measurable changes in people.
Laboratory studies describe GHK-Cu as a source of copper that cells can take up, with reported effects on collagen, elastin, and glycosaminoglycan synthesis in cultured fibroblasts. The peptide also appears in wound-repair research, where it is linked to the activity of matrix metalloproteinases and their inhibitors. These observations come largely from cell and animal models. How directly the complex controls any single pathway in intact human skin remains an open question, and reported effects depend on concentration, vehicle, and exposure time.
Copper takes part in redox chemistry, and the same property that makes it useful in enzymes can generate reactive oxygen species when the ion is loosely bound. GHK chelates copper through imidazole, amino, and amide nitrogen donors, which reduces the amount of free copper in solution. Whether that chelation is protective, neutral, or harmful in a given tissue is not settled. Laboratory assays report both antioxidant and pro-oxidant behavior, depending on the conditions and the readout used.

The compound was first isolated from human plasma in the 1970s by Loren Pickart, who later described copper-binding activity in liver and other tissues. Early reports focused on its presence in blood and its ability to carry copper between proteins. Commercial and cosmetic use of the term 'copper peptide' has since broadened, and labels rarely distinguish GHK-Cu from other copper-binding fragments. This naming overlap makes literature searching harder, because cosmetic ingredient lists, supplier catalogues and laboratory papers use different vocabularies for the same molecule.
GHK-Cu is the copper-binding complex formed by the tripeptide glycyl-L-histidyl-L-lysine and a copper(II) ion. The free peptide is usually written as GHK, and the complex is written as GHK-Cu or Cu-GHK. The sequence was identified in human plasma and later detected in saliva and urine. Its name comes from the single-letter codes of glycine, histidine and lysine. The complex is widely described as a naturally occurring carrier of copper in blood rather than as a free peptide with its own hormonal role.
Copper binds to the peptide through the histidine imidazole nitrogen and the terminal amino group, forming a stable square-planar complex. Binding constants reported for copper(II) with GHK are high, so the peptide competes effectively for copper in solution. The complex absorbs visible light, which gives solutions a blue to violet colour. Whether the metal-free peptide has a distinct biological function of its own is still an open question; some work treats it mainly as a copper delivery vehicle, while other work reports peptide-specific effects.
Identity and purity are normally checked by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography, often coupled to mass spectrometry. The peptide absorbs in the ultraviolet region, and the copper complex also shows a broad visible absorption band that can be followed spectroscopically. Copper content is measured separately, for example by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry or atomic absorption spectroscopy, because the peptide assay alone does not confirm how much metal is bound. Purity figures therefore need a stated basis: peptide peak area, copper content, or both.
Aqueous GHK-Cu solutions are less stable than the dry powder. Light, dissolved oxygen and elevated temperature all accelerate loss of the intact complex, and the main observable changes are fading of the blue colour and the appearance of peptide fragments. Acidic conditions protonate the histidine imidazole and weaken copper binding, while strongly alkaline conditions promote hydrolysis of the peptide backbone. Because several degradation routes operate at once, a single shelf-life figure does not describe all storage conditions.
Solid material is typically kept as a lyophilised powder in a sealed, light-protected container at minus 20 degrees Celsius, with desiccant where humidity is high. Working solutions are often prepared fresh, aliquoted and frozen to avoid repeated freeze-thaw cycles. Glassware and buffers are checked for trace metal contamination, since other transition metals can displace copper. Records of lot number, reconstitution date and storage temperature help trace unexpected colour changes. Blue colour itself is not a reliable purity test, because partly degraded solutions can remain visibly coloured.
Published work on GHK-Cu concentrates largely on cell culture systems rather than whole organisms. Frequently used endpoints include collagen synthesis, expression of matrix metalloproteinases, and migration of fibroblasts. Some reports describe antioxidant behavior, while others stress delivery of copper into cells. These mechanisms are proposed rather than demonstrated, and the relative weight of each pathway is unclear. Human trials are few and generally small, so laboratory findings should not be read as confirmed clinical results.
GHK-Cu is a coordination complex formed between the tripeptide glycyl-L-histidyl-L-lysine and a copper(II) ion. The peptide backbone consists of glycine, histidine, and lysine joined in that order. Copper is held through the imidazole nitrogen of histidine and the alpha-amino group at the N-terminus, which together produce a square-planar arrangement around the metal center. The solid appears blue to violet, a color that originates from d-d electronic transitions within the copper coordination sphere. The complex is indexed under CAS number 89030-95-5.
The sequence now called GHK was first reported in the early 1970s after isolation from human plasma, where it was noted to influence liver cell behavior in laboratory preparations. Later work described a copper-binding form and its activity in fibroblast and wound-model experiments. Review articles frequently group the substance with other copper peptides. Concentrations in blood appear to fall with age in several small surveys, although the reason for this trend is not settled. Whether such a decline carries functional consequences remains an open question.

=== Phosphorus-33 === Phosphorus-33 is a radioactive isotope of phosphorus; it is produced from sulfur-33. is a pure β-emitter, like 32P, and can be used as an alternative to it in research in molecular biology. Indeed, its longer half-life and especially its lower decay energy make its manipulation simpler in the laboratory. In the medical field, 33P has been used in the treatment of arterial stenosis but is no longer indicated at this time.
Following Sigmund Freud's pioneering work, ideas stemming from psychoanalytic theory also began to take root in psychiatry. The psychoanalytic theory became popular among psychiatrists because it allowed the patients to be treated in private practices instead of warehoused in asylums.

==== Partial re-escalation ==== In February, Frederiksen warned that Trump was still "very serious" about acquiring Greenland. On 21 February, Trump announced that he was sending a "hospital boat" to Greenland, claiming that many Greenlanders were sick and not receiving care. Earlier in the day, the Danish military had announced the evacuation of a crew member from an American submarine for a medical emergency. It is unknown if Trump was getting confused with that incident or was referring to something else. Trump's announcement drew widespread ridicule, with Prime Minister Nielsen saying "It's a no thank you from here" and many noting Greenland (and the Danish Realm) has nationalised healthcare, unlike the United States. On 8 April, during the 2026 Iran war, Trump posted on Truth Social about NATO allies "not being there" to join the war effort when the US "needed" them, referencing Greenland and referring to it as "that big, poorly run, piece of ice". On 7 July, during the 2026 Ankara NATO summit, Trump reiterated that the United States should have control of Greenland. Denmark rejected the proposal, with Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen reaffirming that Greenland was not for sale and that its sovereignty must be respected.

=== Seizures === Levetiracetam is an anti-epileptic drug than can be used to treat partial and generalized seizures. Levetiracetam inhibits P/Q channel-mediated glutamate release and decreases the excitatory post synaptic currents of both AMPA and NMDA receptors in the hippocampus, specifically the dentate gyrus, which is known to propagate seizure activities. The inhibition of glutamate release results in an anti-epileptic response in patients because it decreases the excitatory postsynaptic current. There are many different types of calcium channels, so to prove that the P/Q type calcium channels are directly involved, a P/Q type voltage gated calcium channel inhibitor, omega-agatoxin TK, was used to block the channel. When blocked, patients no longer benefited from the anti-epileptic effects from the drugs. When blockers for L type and N type calcium channels were used, the effects of Levetiracetam were still seen. This is strong evidence that the P/Q type calcium channels are involved in the Levetiracetam treatment which allow for relief from seizures.
Given the wide range of bacterial, viral, fungal, protozoal, and helminthic pathogens that cause debilitating and life-threatening illnesses, the ability to quickly identify the cause of infection is important yet often challenging. For example, more than half of cases of encephalitis, a severe illness affecting the brain, remain undiagnosed, despite extensive testing using the standard of care (microbiological culture) and state-of-the-art clinical laboratory methods. Metagenomic sequencing-based diagnostic tests are currently being developed for clinical use and show promise as a sensitive, specific, and rapid way to diagnose infection using a single all-encompassing test. This test is similar to current PCR tests; however, an untargeted whole genome amplification is used rather than primers for a specific infectious agent. This amplification step is followed by next-generation sequencing or third-generation sequencing, alignment comparisons, and taxonomic classification using large databases of thousands of pathogen and commensal reference genomes. Simultaneously, antimicrobial resistance genes within pathogen and plasmid genomes are sequenced and aligned to the taxonomically classified pathogen genomes to generate an antimicrobial resistance profile – analogous to antibiotic sensitivity testing – to facilitate antimicrobial stewardship and allow for the optimization of treatment using the most effective drugs for a patient's infection. Metagenomic sequencing could prove especially useful for diagnosis when the patient is immunocompromised.
== Adenosine triphosphate == ATP is the only type of usable form of chemical energy for musculoskeletal activity. It is stored in most cells, particularly in muscle cells. Other forms of chemical energy, such as those available from oxygen and food, must be transformed into ATP before they can be utilized by the muscle cells.

The $60 million a year in public money that is being spent – I would say, wasted – on the PSI is enough to fund approximately 100–200 individual investigator-initiated research grants. These hypothesis-driven proposals are the lifeblood of the scientific enterprise, and as I have discussed recently in other columns, they are being sucked dry by, among other things, an increasing trend to fund large initiatives at their expense. That $60 million a year would raise the payline at a typical NIH institute by about 6 percentile points, enough to make a huge difference to peer review and to the continuance of a lot of important science. A short response to this was published:
== Adsorption spillover == In the case catalytic or adsorbent systems where a metal species is dispersed upon a support (or carrier) material (often quasi-inert oxides, such as alumina or silica), it is possible for an adsorptive species to indirectly adsorb to the support surface under conditions where such adsorption is thermodynamically unfavorable. The presence of the metal serves as a lower-energy pathway for gaseous species to first adsorb to the metal and then diffuse on the support surface. This is possible because the adsorbed species attains a lower energy state once it has adsorbed to the metal, thus lowering the activation barrier between the gas phase species and the support-adsorbed species. Hydrogen spillover is the most common example of an adsorptive spillover. In the case of hydrogen, adsorption is most often accompanied with dissociation of molecular hydrogen (H2) to atomic hydrogen (H), followed by spillover of the hydrogen atoms present. The spillover effect has been used to explain many observations in heterogeneous catalysis and adsorption.

Peptide content is usually measured by reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography, while copper is measured by atomic spectroscopy. Mass spectrometry can confirm the peptide identity and detect copper adducts. Combining these methods gives a more complete picture.
pH, temperature, oxygen, light, and the presence of metal chelators all influence stability. Strong chelators can strip copper from the peptide, and reducing agents can change the copper oxidation state. Lyophilized solid stored cold and dry is generally more stable than aqueous solutions.
Purity is method-dependent because different techniques detect different impurities. A peptide purity value from HPLC does not describe copper content or the amount of free peptide. Reports should specify the analytical method and the ratio of copper to peptide.
It is not approved as a pharmaceutical in major markets and is used mainly as a cosmetic ingredient and a laboratory reagent. Regulatory status varies by country and by the product category in which it appears. Claims about therapeutic effects should be treated separately from permitted cosmetic labeling.
